When we were children, there was a lightness,

fluidity, and joy in moving

our bodies.

“Reclaiming this freedom is our birthright”.

What is the Alexander Technique?

A way of becoming aware of the body through movement and changing muscular habits that cause stress and interference with optimum functioning.

An educative approach developed over 100 years ago by

F. M. Alexander, who after losing his voice, discovered that how he used his body in movement affected his overall comfort or discomfort, ease or disease.

An approach for addressing chronic pain and stress by relearning to walk, stand, sit, lift objects, speak, and generally change our tension patterns to create ease in everything we do.

The Alexander Technique practitioner (or teacher) will guide you through a series of simple movements; identifying where tension is apparent and together through repetition you will discover new patterns of freedom.  The teacher will use a table, chair, and other appropriate props to move your body so that you can experience the lightness and ease in your musculature and skeletal system.

A typical series of sessions starts with several full sessions (50 minutes) weekly or can be done with half-hour sessions twice a week.  The recommended number of sessions varies from individual to individual.  However, to change habits that have been developed over the years takes lots of repetition, so the most lasting changes occur with a commitment of 20 or more sessions.

The only requirements are patience and a willingness to become more aware of your body and its movements, and the desire to change what is no longer helpful; so that you regain the grace and poise that you had as a child.

In 1998 at the age of 43, I thought my active lifestyle was at an end.  The doctors informed me that the constant acute pain I experienced, after three back surgeries, was permanent and not curable.  Then I met Karen Loving; she was my salvation.  After she taught me the Alexander Technique I had my life back.  Now at age 51 I can play golf, chop wood, lift weights and do activity without pain or fear of injury.  Karen didn’t “fix” my problem; she taught me how to “fix” it myself, permanently!
